I’m glad I’m a musician and a songwriter for many reasons, but there are a couple that always seem to stand out time after time: 1) It’s a healthier emotional outlet than, say, alcohol, and 2) writing, recording, and releasing music allows me to say horrible things in public without anyone but me ever realizing it. In a way, I can cheat social norms; to quote Matt Berninger, “There’s some things I should never laugh about in front of family,” but writing sad lyrics lets me do just that. And I can solidify and clarify justifiable grudges without holding onto them for a needlessly long time.
In short, writing songs lets me hold onto things while simultaneously letting them go. This song, I think, reflects that duality — which is why I decided to record it in two distinct versions, labeled Prideful and Pitiful. The former may be the happiest sounding recording I’ve ever made, and the latter is the complete opposite. And somehow, the lyrics fit both sonic contexts. It’s chaos, but it works.
Of course, I am a human being. As such, I do have an element of shame in calling people out through subtext in these lyrics. It’s petty and immature, much like the people towards whom this song is directed. In a way, I’m no better. But, like I said before, nobody will ever know. Barely anyone will ever read this footnote, and even fewer will read into the lyrics enough to know what I’m specifically talking about. Hell, I don’t even know if anyone will hear this song in the first place.
So, if you care to know, ‘One Liar To Another’ is about letting go. For now, the right way to do so for me is through music. I hope we all can find the strength to do it the right way, someday.
